Task 4A- Competitor Analysis for Imagine Dragons

Analysis of Imagine Dragons- Imagine Dragons are an American Alternative rock band from Las vegas, Nevada. They are made up of four men, lead vocalist Dan Reynolds, Lead guitarist Wayne Sermon, Bassist Ben McKee and drummer Daniel Platzman. The band's members are in their 30's. The band have been influenced by people like Nirvana, Muse, The Beatles, Coldplay and U2. They have a band culture of humility, relate-ability and creativity. Imagine dragons made a name for themselves when they filled in for a band called Train at a Las vegas Music festival in 2009.

Competitor Analysis

  • Both have similar tempos and guitar beats in their music.
  • Both feature in musical festivals like Reading and Leeds.
  • Both bands have similar target audiences.
  • Both don’t use any vulgar language in their songs.

Differences:

  • Foals are more heavy metal/rock rather than indie pop/alternative rock.
  • Imagine dragons are more well known on YouTube regarding viewing figures than foals.
  • Foals are only three men
  • Foals have more of a male audience than imagine dragons as their heavy metal/rock appeals more to men than women .

Music video for One Republic 'Wherever I go'

The very first frame of this music video shows the name of the band. This is useful for if someone who is watching the video does not realise who they’re watching and it also reinforces the fact that this is a One Republic video. The foreign writing above the bands name as well as the establishing shot of the city indicates to the audience that this might be a city in a country like Japan, China or South Korea. The very next shot of the video is for the exact same purpose reminding the audience the name of the song this time. There is a further establishing shot of the city; these are all tower blocks that are either offices or apartments. By having the name of the director in the third shot it essentially advertises his other work. It inclines the viewer to maybe search up other projects he’s made whether this was other music videos or possibly short films. Also people who are already familiar with his work might see how it reflects within this music video.

The colours for this music video are grey and dull, this shows the mundanity of every day life. We see this through the establishing shots of the city, with the buildings at the very beginning all being grey as well as in the apartment of the protagonist and also with his walls and his furniture and even with the clothing and the furniture within his office. There are couple of instances in the video that have colourful objects that stand out, a pink packet of crisps, a golden cat and some red Budweiser posters. They are significant in the fact that they don't really fit in with the environment their in and stand out just as our protagonist does.  At the beginning of the video we see a sad face on the ceiling showing that clearly the man is unhappy with his life and this along with the colour scheme shows how discontent he is. When the protagonist starts dancing within the office he is going against the typical behaviour expected of him. He is rebelling against the system and as soon as he does this others seem to follow. In the conclusion of the music video the colour scheme changes completely from grey and white to completely colourful to show a change of equilibrium within the narrative. Now that everyone has decided not to conform to the behaviour that is expected of them everyone seems to be a lot happier.

The protagonist himself has almost gone through a life changing experience just by deciding one day that he wasn't happy with his life. At the start of the video there is a shot of the protagonist in a lift with a bunch of other people he works with. He is however standing on his own in the middle. The video ends with the same shot bringing the video full circle at the end in order to conclude it, this time with him getting the affections of the woman he likes.

One Republic are almost non-existent in terms of them actually being in the video for most of it's duration, we pretty much only hear their voices and we only see them in one short scene towards the end. This shows that the music video was more about the message and the story of the song than it was about the band, they are the ones telling the story through this song and at one point the protagonist gets dragged into what is essentially a shrine to One Republic, where they are performing this song. He realises that they are the narrators of his story.

Album Advert for Kodaline

Although this advert is showing tour dates and not directly marketing a new Kodaline advert, in a way it is due to the image used within the advert which is the artwork for their album 'In a perfect world'. The bands name is the first thing that stood out to me with it being in a big and bold font. This immediately establishes who is being advertised and is the thing that will draw a reader in simply because it cannot be avoided. The setting of the ad, on a lake surrounded by the mountains is a very serene location and is reflective of Kodaline's relaxing music. The colours add to this with them being both vibrant and subtle at the same time, there is an over-saturation of blue and green, both of which in the correct tone can be quite calming and desensitising colours. The people on the dock are just ordinary people. They are not the bands members. This shows that any regular person does not have to be rich or famous to have 'a perfect world'. This ad is also saying that alls you need to have 'a perfect world' is a good location and good people, you don't need to be surrounded by possessions or a big house and this is seen through the fact that all these people have is a dock, the lake and the mountains. Judging by the colour of some of the clouds it seems that the sun is possibly setting. This could be showing the end of a perfect day as well as how time has passed, possibly these people have been there all day.

Unit 3- Assignment 2- Task 3- Audience Research

Task 3A

Who are Imagine Dragons?
Imagine Dragons are an American Alternative rock band from Las vegas, Nevada. The band have a band culture of humility, relate-ability and creativity.

What is the demographic for our band? (Imagine dragons)

Based upon this demographic table we have decided the demographic that our target audience falls under is group E, as they are part of a more casual group which is relatable to the band itself. The band are not a stereotypical rock band as they don't partake in the party lifestyle that one might expect from a rock band. They are laid back and do their own thing, they don't try to be someone that they're clearly not.

Psychographics

We feel that Imagine Dragons' target audience are reformers as this is what the band would be. Often in the bands music there is a sense of personal growth and development as well as social awareness that the band clearly has. As well as this they could possibly be 'explorers' who value difference and adventure which as the table states are "typically a younger demographic".

Age and Profession- Alternative rock tends to have a target audience of people ages 16-25. This age range is stereotyped to students who are at exam age and who are very socially active. This is why Imagine Dragons songs resonate with their audience as they are both explorers and reformers and these are what their songs are about.

Gender and race- The imagine dragons audience might be predominantly male due to the fact that the artists/band themselves are male and therefore the audience will be able to relate better to them. As well as this the band are white and don't really write songs about issues that might resonate or relate with other ethnicities such as what hip-hop and R&B artists do. Therefore from this I think that their target audience will be predominantly white.

Overall Target audience
From this information I can conclude that Imagine Dragons target audience will be white, male students who are highly socially active aged 16-25. In terms of the values a typical listener would stand for they might "seek enlightenment"  or be more of a free spirit. Like Imagine dragons themselves their audience would be socially aware and not exactly live the kind of lifestyle we might expect other rockers to have.

Task 3B- Audience Profile
Media Preferences
Most 16-25 who are millennials would have been born in the golden age of technology and therefore their media preferences would be largely based online. Rather than going out to buy CDs, this target audience might instead download music whether it be through services like iTunes or through Amazon Prime (or illegal methods such as torrenting). Other ways to watch or listen to music and music videos might be through streaming services such as spotify, tidal, apple music or even through YouTube. This is because these are convenient and fast methods of having the music available to them. As a result of this, the target audience are also very likely to use social media to talk about the music they listen to as well as post links to their favourite music videos.

Buying Patterns
Buying patterns for this target audience would most likely be consumer goods such as clothes and electronic items. This increases the potential amount of views, downloads or listeners that there could be for music. This target audience being students are highly likely to own or regularly use laptops or computers whether this be for work or for recreational use. This is further opportunity for music to be downloaded or streamed on. As well as this Imagine Dragons are involved in the gaming and eSports (competitive gaming) scene which could be influential for their audience who might also be involved or want to get involved with this. Seeing as their audience are 16-25 year old males it is also very likely that a large majority of these people play/buy video games due to the fact that 16-25 year old males make up a huge proportion of the player base for video games.

Viewing Patterns
There are a few different ways that this target audience might specifically view music videos with them being a younger target audience. The kinds of places that music videos aimed at 16-25 year olds might appear would mainly be online on YouTube or VEVO pages as these are the places they are the most easily accessible and most convenient for this demographic of people. As well as this there are certain music TV channels that this age range might listen to music off of such as the MTV music channels or other channels that play the latest and most popular chart music. This is because this demographic is highly likely to consistently listen to today’s most popular and up to date songs, essentially the music that is playing on the radio currently rather than other music that is slightly older or not as relevant anymore.

As well as this, Imagine Dragons specifically are streamed massively online, proving that their audience would mainly use online forms of watching and listening to their songs.

Unit 3- Assignment 2- Task 2- Primary Research

Task 2A

This is a link to the questionnaire that Harrison and I have made in order to gather quantitive date for our music video, digipak and magazine album advert
https://goo.gl/forms/6lVo2tT5DCWlGNLE2

Task 2B

As a group Harrison and I decided on an internet forum for research on music videos for Imagine Dragons (our chosen artist), Interviews for information about digipaks and a focus group for information about music magazine album adverts. We decided that I would carry out the Internet forum, Harrison would carry out the interviews and together we would carry out the focus group.

Internet Forum for Imagine Dragons Music Videos (my research)
This is an internet forum that I participated in. I created a thread on the forum website Reddit where users can create posts and people can respond to them. For my research I asked what peoples favourite Imagine Dragons music videos were and why, hoping to get an insight into why people like some of their music videos- https://www.reddit.com/r/imaginedragons/comments/5bmft1/what_are_you_favourite_imagine_dragons_music/

This was the question that I posted:

These are some of the answers I received in response:

Unit 3- Assignment 2- Task 1 Secondary Research

Task 1A

1. The Top 30 Most viewed Music Videos of all time- http://edm.com/articles/2016/1/9/most-viewed-music-videos-of-all-time

This link shows the top 30 most viewed music videos of all time in order from 1st to 30th. From this we can see that PSY- Gangnam Style is the most viewed music video of all time with about 2.6 billion views.

2. YouTube Statistics- http://expandedramblings.com/index.php/youtube-statistics/4/

This website shows specific YouTube statistics including where some of the YouTube viewership figures specifically come from. The screenshot below from this website shows that as of September 2014 38% of YouTube Views came from music videos.

The official description for this YouTube Channel is "YouTube's music destination featuring top tracks and popular hits from a variety of genres. This channel was generated automatically by YouTubes video discovery system". Essentially this channel is the central hub for Music Videos on YouTube with the channel having about 96 million subscribers. The channel showcases the most popular songs/music videos in the current day, whilst songs are popular, and is essentially made up of videos from other channels (Like a band/artists VEVO).

Gangnam style is not only the most viewed music video of all time but is also the most viewed video on YouTube. It has around 2.6 billion views with the follow up song 'Gentlemen' also with 1 billion views.

In terms of the top ten most watched YouTube videos of all time as of October 2016 music videos are there 9 out of 10 times all of which have accumulated over 1 billion views. This shows that some of the most popular videos online are music videos whether that be for watching or even just listening purposes.

Vevo is a video website owned by Universal Music group, Sony Music entertainment and Warner music group that shares/hosts music videos. They also have an official YouTube page. The website has huge traffic with over"16 billion views worldwide for 6 consecutive months" which shows how popular a platform this is for music videos.

The imagine dragons VEVO page shows how many subscribers and channel views there have been which can give an idea of how popular the channel is for this band. The channel has nearly 5 million subscribers and has accumulated nearly 2 billion views overall which shows that if this band wants to showcase their music videos then this is one place to do it. Each music video released on this channel also accumulates hundreds of millions of views.

8. Imagine Dragons- Radioactive- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktvTqknDobU

The most viewed imagine dragons YouTube music video is 'Radioactive' which has over 600 million views. Almost all of those views either would have come from an already existing fan base or would have been recommended to others on YouTube itself.

Although smaller in comparison to something like VEVO, Vimeo has its own community of people and its own audience. It is a good place for smaller artists to share music and the channel nearly has 100,000 followers with some of the music videos accumulating tens of thousands of views.
